Munay Kollektiv

We are a collective centered on art, science, decoloniality, and community-building. From Perú, based in Austria and Denmark.

Munay Cacao is a multidisciplinary project delving into raising awareness of the origin and significance of cocoa or cacao (Theobroma cacao) and its whole supply chain, as well as other value chains, reflecting on its (ethical) consumption and highlighting the challenges involved in this global supply chain (living income gap, child labor), where the Global South and Global North connect. Peruvian twin sisters Benazir (an artist and researcher based in Denmark) and Yanisse Basauri Torres (a forest scientist and researcher based in Austria) advocate for a transdisciplinary approach involving science, nature, and art, deeply intertwined to take us across the cacao journey from raw material origin to consumption, prompting us to ask: Where does the chocolate I am about to eat come from? Were the people at the beginning of the supply chain paid a fair share? Did they have decent work conditions? Are colonial powers still present in today’s global raw material supply chains? This project aims to make us realize, in community, that our daily actions here impact other regions of our planet, and that we are all interconnected.
