En*gender*ing Climate Futures

A year-long project on gender and climate equity

Vienna, Austria December 2025
genderfeminismclimateworkshop

Engendering climate futures is a year-long project by Science Meets Art and SOHO in Ottakring focusing on the intersectionality of gender and climate equity.

It centres and crosses perspectives from artists, activists and scientists through two workshops and one exhibition.

Part II — Transformative Futures Workshop (October 18, 2025)

What? Transformative Futures Workshop: Exploring Territory, Memory, and Imagination
Where? SOHO Studios, Liebknechtgasse 32, 1160 Wien
When? October 18 · 14:00–18:00

How have gender identity and equity been related to climate among your past generations, how is it now and how do you think or wish it will be for the future ones?

We gathered to collectively reflect on this and, learning from holistic approaches, we focused on transformative linkages and regenerative futures, rather than temporal and unsustainable.

The workshop started with inputs on ways of thinking about gender and climate futures in mainstream and alternative streams of science. A collective practice followed, where we were asked to think of situations in the past, present and future — decomposing and gathering them, breaking the relation to time, and highlighting places, territories, themes, and problematics. We ended by doing a Collage of Transformative Future together.

Part I — Vienna Participatory-Mapping Workshop (May 17, 2025)

What? Vienna participatory-mapping workshop of gender & climate change experiences
Where? SOHO Studios, Liebknechtgasse 32, 1160 Wien
When? May 17 · 14:00–18:00

Who is most vulnerable to climate change? How does it affect the place I live in? What possibilities exist, in our city, to respond to the climate crisis? What does any of this have to do with gender — and why should it matter?

This interactive workshop explored the intersection of climate change and gender through collective reflection, scientific input, and participatory-mapping. Participants began with a sharing circle to build connection and solidarity, followed by science insights on how gender and climate intersect, grounded in concepts like situated knowledge and intersectionality. Through a participatory-mapping exercise, we collaboratively explored how different experiences shape our understanding of the place we live in, at the intersection between climate and gender justice.

Exhibition: Was zwischen uns wächst

Where: SOHO Studios, Liebknechtgasse 32, 1160 Wien
Opening: 4 December 2025
Duration: 5 December 2025 – 22 January 2026
Opening hours: Wed–Sun, 3–8 p.m.

In the SOHO annual exhibition WAS ZWISCHEN UNS WÄCHST, artistic and scientific perspectives are brought together to make feminism and ecology visible as interwoven forces. The starting point is the question of how, in the midst of the climate crisis, we can develop new forms of coexistence, care, and resistance.
